When your child is bright and the school keeps saying something is wrong.
An educational psychology assessment, and a written report the school has to take seriously.
The situation most parents describe
Your child is clearly intelligent. At home they explain things, notice things, argue well. At school the reports say lazy, distracted, disruptive, or slow. Someone has suggested more discipline. Someone else has suggested prayer. Nobody has actually assessed anything.
This is the most common reason parents come, and it is usually solvable once somebody looks properly.
What Christie is trained to do
Her doctorate is in educational psychology, guidance and counselling — which means the learning side of this is her actual field, not an adjacent interest. She assesses how your child learns, where the breakdown is, and whether the difficulty is cognitive, emotional, environmental, or a mix.
- Suspected learning difficulties, including dyslexia-type patterns
- Attention and concentration difficulties
- School refusal, anxiety about school, or sudden collapse in performance
- Behaviour at school that does not match behaviour at home
- Bullying, social difficulty, or a child who has gone quiet
- Transition problems — new school, new country, a family change
A child who is failing is telling you something. The work is finding out what.
The written report
You leave with a report addressed to the school: what was assessed, what was found, and specific accommodations to put in place. This matters more than parents expect. A verbal request from a parent is easy for a school to absorb and forget. A written assessment from a doctoral-level educational psychologist is not.
How the session runs
Ninety minutes, parents present. Depending on what emerges, Christie may recommend a follow-up with the child, a meeting with the school, or referral to a paediatrician or speech therapist. She will say which, and why.
